Benefits of a LEED Home from U.S. Green Building Council on Vimeo.
LEED for Homes is a voluntary rating system that promotes the design and construction of high-performance green homes, including affordable housing, mass-production homes, custom designs, stand-alone single-family homes, duplexes and townhouses, suburban and urban apartments and condominiums and lofts in historic buildings. Green homes use less energy, water and natural resources, create less waste, and are more durable and comfortable for occupants.
Green Building Authority is proud to be LEED for Homes Green Rater certified.
LEED for Homes is a national, voluntary certification system developed by national experts and experienced builders that promotes the design and construction of high-performance green homes and encourages the adoption of sustainable practices by the homebuilding industry. LEED certification is based on 18 prerequisites and 67 credits. The prerequisites are mandatory for every project, and no points are awarded for meeting them. To achieve certification, project teams earn credit points by exceeding the minimum standards of the prerequisites. A total of 136 credit points is available within the following 8 categories:
1. Innovation and Design Process
2. Location and Linkages
3. Sustainable Sites
4. Water Efficiency
5. Energy and Atmosphere
6. Materials and Resources
7. Indoor Environmental Quality
8. Awareness and Education
Credit values reflect the significance of meeting the stated credit intent. Required third-party verification and performance testing differentiate and add value to the LEED for Homes rating system. One of the core strengths of the LEED for Homes program is that the green components are all verified by a third party. Third-party verification is essential to the integrity of the program because it gives prospective home buyers confidence and reassurance. Green Raters deliver verification services under the direct supervision of a LEED for Homes Provider, and are expected to verify individual LEED prerequisites and credits following the guidance provided by USGBC in the Verification & Submittal (V&S) Guidelines.
